Julia A. Mahan

Mrs. Julia Hughes, widow of the late John Hughes, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Geo. Bachman in Wichita Friday morning, July 3. The casket containing her body was shipped to Severy on the Frisco accompanied by Mr. Hurst. Undertaker Moon of Howard brought the casket and its burden to his home in Howard. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hughes, Mrs. Bachman and daughter, Wava, and Mrs. Hurst had motored from Wichita to Severy and arrived just before the train came in. A. W. Finley and Newton Hill were also at Severy to meet the train. Mr. Hurst came to Howard in Mr. Finley's car. The funeral service at the home of Mr. Moon was held at 2 p.m., just a brief talk by Newton Hill, an old-time friend of the family. Interment in Gracelawn cemetery in the family lot. Mrs. Hughes was born April 5. 1844, and passed away July 3, 1925, aged almost 81 years and 3 months. She leaves to mourn her departure three daughters, Mrs. Letha Hurst, Medford, Oklahoma; Mrs. Emma Finley, Campo, Colorado, and Mrs. Nellie Bachman of Wichita; one son, Fred Hughes of Wichita; one brother, Oliver Mahan of Wichita, also seven grandchildren and many friends. Mrs. Hughes was highly respected by all that knew her and dearly loved by those most closely associated with her. Mr. and Mrs. Hughes came to the vicinity of Elk Falls from Michigan in 1870. Mrs. Hughes has made her home with her children since the death of her husband which occurred several years ago.

Redfearn, B. Atwater, E. A. Maxwell, W. E. Keefe, Miss Agnes McDiarmid, Geneva Redfearn, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Pickell and daughter, Mrs. Vick, also were present. Also, Louie Strachan and sister, neighbors of Mr. and Mrs. Hughes for many years.
