Thomas Conley Whitehurst

(3 Oct 1933 - 11 May 2011)

DALHART - Tom C. Whitehurst, 77 died Wednesday, May 11, 2011.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church in Dalhart with Jeff Wilkerson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery by Horizon Funeral Home.
Thomas was born Oct. 3, 1933, in Mount Pleasant to John T. and Martha Ann Cloud Whitehurst.
He grew up on a ranch in the Fort Worth area, he then moved to the Bovina, where he attended school. In 1948, the family moved to Clovis, N.M., where he attended high school.
After high school, he moved to Abilene, where he married Claudette Lambert and they had two children, Tracey Whitehurst and Dayna Whitehurst McIntire.
Later, he moved back to Clovis and drove a truck for El Rancho Milling Co. Later, when the Swift plant opened in Clovis, Tom was hired as the utility man and was capable of doing any job in the plant. He then went to work for Panhandle Steel, where he learned to erect steel buildings and grain bins.
In 1959, he married Lynn Pace and they had three children, Robin Whitehurst, Tommie Lynn Whitehurst and Becky Whitehurst Ferrell. He also raised Lynn's two children, Mike and Jerri Lynn, which he later adopted.
Then he went into the construction business of his own, Whitehurst Steel Erectors. He later relocated the business to Dalhart in 1973. In that year, he met his partner in life, his loving wife, Glenda Garrett. He became the father of two more children that he raised as his own, Shelli Bradford and Tonya Garrett.
To say Tom Whitehurst was a family man is an understatement. During all the years of the family owned business, all the boys worked beside Tom hand in hand. Whitehurst Steel Erectors has always been an innovator for the grain bin industry.
Tom never met a stranger and was never without a joke to tell. He will be greatly missed by all, farmers, friends, family and people he associated with in life. He loved dancing, telling jokes, growing roses, playing dominoes, and being with his family and friends.
His accomplishments were the first to build a grain bin over a concrete hopper, and developed the slip to auger. He was a member of the Dalhart Elk's Lodge, the Ambassador and the NRA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Shelli Bradford; a brother, Harold Whitehurst; a sister, Geraldine Wilkerson; and a granddaughter, Rayna Williams.
Survivors include his wife, Glenda Whitehurst; three sons, Tracey Whitehurst and Robin K. Whitehurst, both of Dalhart, and Mike Whitehurst of Pollock Pine, Calif.; and five daughters, Dayna McIntire of Abilene, Jerri Lynn Love of Broken Arrow, Okla., Tommy Lynn Whitehurst and Becky Ann Ferrell, both of Dalhart, and Tanya Garrett of Canyon. Tom had the pleasure of having 20 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by two brothers, Joe Whitehurst of Portales, N.M., and Al Whitehurst of McKinney; and a sister, Lahonda Horton of Clovis.
