Betty Rosalind Roycroft

Daughter of Percy Bell Roycroft and Saby Nona Herren.
Betty was originally buried at Hopewell Cemetery but in a building expansion the church moved Betty and her sister, Janet, to Tuscaloosa Memorial Park.
While walking to Sunday evening services on October 28, 1934 at Hopewell Baptist Church near Alberta, Betty Rosiland Roycroft was killed instantly by a hit and run driver. Also injured was Betty's mother Saby Herren Roycroft.
The driver, from Birmingham, continued into Tuscaloosa where he abandoned his car. Still on the bumper of the car was Saby's purse and sunday school book. Two days later the driver turned himself in to the Birmingham police and was brought to Tuscaloosa.
The driver was charged with 2nd degree murder but in court on the 12th of December he plead guilty to the lesser charge of 2nd degree manslaughter. He was sentenced to 12 months at hard labor, suspended.
