Individual Details
Sarah Murphy Greer
(10 Feb 1805 - 27 Feb 1888)
Two families are conflated in FamilySearch Family Tree.
1. Sarah M. Curtis, born about 1805 in Georgia, is in census records of 1850, 1860, 1870, all in Monroe County, Georgia. Her husband is absent from all these census records, but in 1850 she is listed with eight children, all born in Georgia: Taphly L. [Tarpley], Sarah E., Amanda A., Malinda B., Ezekiel M., Eliza A., Arenah M. [Martha], and Bernilous J. Curtis. In 1860 Sarah Curtis is living with T. L. [Tarpley], Malinda [Curtis] Walter, Eliza, Martha, and L. C. [?] Curtis. In 1870 Sarah M. Curtis is with T. L. [Tarpley], E. A. [Eliza A.], and Wm B. Curtis. In 1880 Tarpley Curtis is living alone, but he stated that he and his mother were from Georgia, while his father was from Virginia. In 1880 Sarah Curtis is living with her grandson, William Curtis, age 23 and married, [perhaps the son of Tarpley or the illegitimate son of Sarah E.], in Monroe County, Georgia. An older son, John H. Curtis, also born in Georgia, had a son named Tapley, so he probably come from this family. A descendant of Sarah's grandson, William Curtis, shares DNA with me, Rex Wilson, so this Sarah must be the true descendant of Rev. Thomas Greer Jr and Sarah Murphy.
2. Sarah [Greer] Curtis, born about 1805 in South Carolina, is in the 1850 census at McNairy County, Tennessee, with her husband, Benjamin Curtis. His origin is not known, but their six children are all born in Tennessee: Joel, Jane, Malinda, Arilla, Solomon, and Benjamin Curtis. This Sarah M. Curtis, wife of W. B. Curtis, is buried at the Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in DeKalb County, Alabama. The record shows that Sarah Greer/Grier married William Curtis in Greene County, Georgia on 10 Jan 1821.
These two women named Sarah Curtis are the same age and coincidentally both have daughters named Malinda born about 1835. However, they are from different states, have different children, and are living in different places in 1850. Obviously, they are two different women, each with their own family.
FamilySearch Family Tree has all the children from both families together as if they were one family.
