John Wilbanks

John Wilbanks was born in Spartanburg District, SC, the son of William Wilbanks (1751-1816) and Phoebe Smith (1755-1825). He married (1st) Fannie Jackson who bore him one son. He married (2nd) Martha B. Smith (1794-1824) on 21 March 1810 in Spartanburg District, South Carolina who bore him at least three children. He married (3rd) to an unknown person, who bore him about five children.

OBITUARY: "Southern Christian Advocate," Saturday, November 30, 1878 (Vol. XLI, No. 39, p. 7, Col. 4)
Mr. John Wilbanks was born in Spartanburg County, S.C., December 6th, 1786, and died within four miles of where he was born, November 11th, 1878, in peace. He had been a member of the Methodist Church for many years, and died in the communion of the Methodist Protestant Church. He was very kindly cared for by his children in his declining years, receiving from them unremitted attentions. A very large concourse of relatives and friends attended his burial services at Belmont Church. Wm. W. M.

NOTE: The above obituary, by the stated date of death and by the publication date, shows that John Wilbanks' date of death is incorrect on his tombstone by one year, and it should read 1878. The year of birth is different between that on the tombstone and that in the obituary.
