Individual Details
John Henry Lee Jr.
(12 Apr 1943 - 4 May 2019)
John Henry Lee Jr., a staple in the Bill Arp community in Douglasville for four decades, died Saturday, May 4, at age 76.
Lee, who lived in Villa Rica, opened Lee Discounts on Highway 5 just north of Bill Arp Park in July 1981.
Lee's father, John Henry Lee Sr., founded Lee's Hardware in Lanett, Alabama, and his son "had a natural bend to retail," Lee's son-in-law Chris Anderson said.
Lee Discounts was an "immediate success," Anderson said, serving the central part of Douglas County at a time when the Bill Arp Store was the only other place for locals to get things they needed without leaving the community.
"In time it evolved into a movie rental store, a tanning salon, and discount store all-in-one," Anderson said. "The store remained in business for almost four decades and customers were like friends and family. John's God given business sense took him the distance. He and his wife Janice closed the store in January of 2019 to retire."
Janice was by her husband's side when he died, just as she had been by his side every day in business and home life, Anderson said.
"Lee's Discount store may be gone from the landscape of Douglasville, but the friendships made will live forever in the hearts and lives of John's family," Anderson said.
Lee was born in Opelika, Alabama, on April 12, 1943, to the late John Henry Lee Sr. and Montine Harrington Lee Day.
He started work at his dad's hardware store and served in the United States Army before marrying and opening his store in Douglas County.
Funeral services are scheduled for 7 p.m., Friday, May 10, 2019 at the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home in Dahlonega. The Rev. Chris Anderson and John's eldest son John Henry Lee III, will officiate. He will be laid to rest at 2 p.m. Saturday in West Point, Georgia, at West Point Cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends from 2-7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
