Jack Berry Ricks

Jack Berry Ricks was born on March 17, 1900 in San Antonio, Texas. His parents were Cora Lee and Jackson Berry Rix. The 1900 census shows his parents and six siblings living in Greenville, Hunt County, Texas. About 1904 his father began serving two years in prison for cattle theft. The 1910 census of Reeves County, Texas finds Jack “Rix” (10) and Richard Rix (7) living as “boarders” in the household of Lee Wheelis.
Jack served in the Navy during World War I 1917-1919. The 1920 census of Bexar County, Texas finds “Jack B Ricks” (19) living in the household of John R Talley. Jack was listed as a “friend” in his relationship to John Talley. In 1931 Jack married Texas born Sammie Louise Britton. They had a daughter Barbara L (Larremore) born to them about 1933. A second daughter, Darlene Ricks (Archer) was born in Texas in January 1935.
In 1934 the Ajo Copper mine had reopened after a two year shut down. Jack's father had lived in Ajo from about 1915 until his death from tuberculosis in 1928. HIs widow, Cora Lee, remarried (Isaiah Thixton). Jack and Sammie Ricks left Fort Stockton, Texas and arrived in Ajo, Arizona in 1936. At the time of the 1940 census the Ricks family owned a modest home in the northern part of Ajo known as Gibson. Jack and Sammie had both completed high school. Jack was employed by the Phelps Dodge corporation as a foreman in the tailings operation of the copper mine. At some time during World War II Jack Ricks served in the military. His obituary noted that he was a veteran of World War II.
Barbara “Bobbie” Ricks graduated from Ajo High School in 1950 and would later marry Thomas Larremore. Darlene Ricks graduated in 1953 and later married Elbert Archer.
The Ricks family moved a few times within the Ajo area taking advantage of the mining company rentals. About 1975 Jack retired from the copper mine as a mill inspector for the Phelps Dodge copper mine.
By 1977 they bought a house and were living at 901 W. Rocalla Ave. Jack had been ill for some time before leaving Ajo for Fort Stockton, Texas in the summer of 1984. Jack Berry Ricks died at the Pecos County Memorial Hospital in Fort Stockton in late November 1984. He was buried at the East Hill Cemetery in Fort Stockton, Texas. Jack was survived by his wife Sammie of Ajo and his daughters Barbara Larremore and Darlene Archer.
Sammie Louise Ricks died in 1999 in Fort Stockton, Texas. Darlene Archer passed away in 2010 survived by her sister “Bobbie” Larremore of Safford, Arizona.
