Sarah was born in England, most likely in Tudley, Kent, about 1570. She was the daughter of James Burgess. Her mother's name is unknown. Around 1589, she married William Merriam, again most likely in Tudely. He became a prosperous cloth merchant in Hadlow, Kent. Sarah and William had eight children, most likely they were all born in Tudely or Hadlow. William wrote his will in September of 1635 and named his wife, Sarah in the will, indicating that she was alive at that time. The exact date of Sarah's death is unknown.
James Burgess of Tudeley, Kent, mentioned in his will of 1590 his "son-in-law William Meryam."
