George Merriam
(1602 - 29 Dec 1675)
The son of WILLIAM & SARAH (BURGESS) MERIAM/MERRIAM, George, his father (WILLIAM), and brother, Joseph were clothiers in Hadlow, co. Kent, England. According to Donald Lines Jacobus, their ancestry can be traced back to William Merriam, who died in 1478/9.
Note: The names Merriam and Merriman were often interchanged.
George, his wife, SUSANNAH RAVEN whom he married on Oct. 16, 1627 in Tonbridge, Kent, England and at least two children may have come to America on the ship, "CASTLE OF LONDON" arriving in Charlestown in the colony of Mass. in July of 1638. It was in the same year amount the "Feet of Fines" or deeds of land in the county of Kent, that George Mirriam and Susanna his wife conveyed "Two messuages, two barns, two gardens, two orchards, and six acres of land in Tewdley, co. Kent" to "Anne Towne, widow."
He was declared a freeman of Mass. on June 2, 1641. The family was living in Concord by 1644 where he signed a petition for compassion on behalf of Mr. Ambrose Martin along with Robert Meriam, Thomas Wheeler, George, & Joseph Wheeler.
In his will, dated Oct. 8, 1675 in Concord, Count. of Midd., New England and proved April 4, 1675, he proclaimed his belief in Jesus Christ and his desire for a Christian burial. His beloved wife is bequeathed all his moveables and he named his five daughters as follows: Sarah Gove of Cambridge, Elizabeth West of Salem, Hannah Axdell of Marlbury, Susan Scotchford of Concord and Abigail Bateman of Concord. He also mentions his son, Samuel, as executor.
According to Savage, the children of George & Susannah Meriam were Elizabeth, SAMUEL (my ancester), Hannah, Abigail, Sarah, and Susanna.
