Patricia Faye Oates

(17 Mar 1914 - 14 Jan 2013)

March 17, 1914 - Jan. 14, 2013
Patricia Faye Oates Ashcraft, loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother at the age of 98, went to be with her Lord and Savior on January 14, 2013 in Stafford, Texas.
Faye was born in San Angelo, Texas on March 17, 1914, the second child to parents, William Henry Oates and Cera Green Oates. She spent her young years in San Angelo and Bay City, Texas and later went to live with her grandparents, John Henry Oates and Maggie Mae Stroud Oates. She graduated from Bay City High School. There she met her future husband while visiting a friend. Her first glimpse of J.N. Ashcraft was while he was riding bulls with friends on a Sunday afternoon. They were married on February 4, 1931 in her grandmother’s parlor.
Friends Sonny and Polly Williams hosted their wedding dinner.
They moved to Angleton to begin their life together. They were the parents of three children, Jerry Lester, Margaret Kaye and John Paul.
She was always involved in her children’s lives and activities. She served as room mother, fund raiser or whatever was needed she provided. She was an active member of the Child Study Club and attended the First Methodist Church. She was a member of the Friendship Sunday School class. As her children grew older she saw the need to expand her activities.
Amidst raising a family and caring for a home she attended beauty school in Houston and established the Chat’n Curl Beauty Shop in Angleton which she owned and operated for many years.
A transfer for her husband necessitated a move to Alvin, Texas and provided an opportunity to purchase another business, A House of Beauty, which she operated for many years. She participated in ABWA, an association for business women in Alvin.
Along with her business responsibilities, Nonny and Daddy Pop made their grandchildren a top priority with many camping and fishing trips to several state parks. She was an excellent cook and her table was the favorite for holidays. Her recipes remain favorites in her family today. She was an accomplished seamstress, creating special dresses and formals for proms and special occasions. A feminist before her time, the family relates a story concerning a new car her husband purchased. It was brand new and perfect and J.N. thought it would be better if Faye did not drive it (you know, a woman driver), so he took the keys to work with him. When she discovered the keys were not available, she marched out and pulled out every wire she could find under the hood. She retorted, “If I can’t drive it, you can’t either!!!”
That spunk lasted throughout her lifetime.
Upon her husband’s death she retired from the beauty business and eventually experienced travel in the United States, including Hawaii, Canada and Europe. One trip was a train trip to Portland, Oregon to visit family. Two of her grandchildren, Pam and Paul, accompanied her—a grand adventure for two young children. A later trip treated grandson David. She was the favorite babysitter for all her grandchildren and was always available when needed. She gave of her time and effort to many organizations. She was a member of Eastern Star, Woodmen of the World and a member of the Women’s Bible Class of the First United Methodist Church of Alvin and participated in their many trips and activities. She volunteered for many years at the Shriner’s Burn Clinic in Galveston and enjoyed the Senior Friends organization in Alvin. She enjoyed ballroom dancing and earned many trophies in competition. She loved her pets—special favorites were Judy, a toy bulldog, and Sissy, a schnauzer, her constant companion in her last years. One of her most favorite activities was playing dominos. She belonged to a group that played “84” each week. Often as not she was the winner. She was a devoted friend and helper to all who knew her. Her sweet smile and presence will be missed.
Faye is predeceased by her husband of 40 years, J.N. Ashcraft; her son, John Paul Ashcraft; her daughter-in-law, Paula Deann Ashcraft; her sister, Willy Ruth Haglund; and her brother, Carl Henry Oates.
