James William Herring
(31 Mar 1928 - 6 Dec 2018)
James “Jim” W. Herring, 90, Marion, went to be with his Lord and Savior at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday, December 6, 2018, at Marion General Hospital. He was born in West Frankfort, IL, on March 31, 1928, to the late William J. and Sena Naomi (Weaver) Herring.
Following high school graduation, Jim enlisted in the Army and served from 1946-1948. After his honorable discharge, he married his loving bride, Betty Vaughn, on January 30, 1949. Together they had three daughters, Judy, Debbie, and Patty. He continued his education and graduated from Marion College with a bachelor’s degree in religion. He went on to receive his master’s degree in elementary education from Ball State University. He began his teaching career with Eastbrook Community Schools (for 3 years) and then taught 24 years until his retirement with Marion Community Schools.
Jim enjoyed tinkering and mechanical work. He was a jack of all trades. Jim’s love for the Lord led him to serve 15 years in pastoral ministries with both the Wesleyan and Friends churches. He attended Eastview Wesleyan Church and loved sharing the gospel of Christ with anyone he met. He enjoyed reading his Greek New Testament and making notes of Bible verses. Jim was a devout Christian and loved being with family. His life was one that was well-lived and well-loved.
He is survived by daughters, Judith Henry, Des Moines, IA, and Deborah (Harold) Jenkins, Marion; grandchildren, Jonathan Ohrt, Adam Ohrt, Tiffany Jenkins, Ashley (Alex) Jenkins, Shane (Jennett) Jefferies, and Tracie (James) Dalton; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Harvey (Rachel) Herring, Marion; sisters, Vivian Freeman, MO, and Betty Jean Holder, Jonesboro.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 70 years, Betty; a daughter, Patricia Jefferies; sister, Iva Wolfe; brother, Herman Herring, sister-in-law, Mariam Herring; and brothers-in-law, Harold Freeman and Fred Holder.
The family will receive visitors with Jim’s funeral service December 11, 2018, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN. His brother, Pastor Harvey Herring, will be officiating the service. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory.
