Individual Details

Thomas Brooks

( - 21 May 1667)

The son of Hugh & Dorothy (Preston) Brooks, he married Grace in England. Virkus says that he immigrated with his wife and child on the good ship, SUSAN AND ELLEN in 1635. However, this Thomas Brooks was only 18 years old when he sailed and is probably the THOMAS BROOKS, my ancestor, who settled in Lynn, Mass. and died in Haddam, CT.

The first Thomas Brooks and his wife were in Mass. as early as 1631, which is probably this Thomas & Grace Brooks. He took the oath of freeman on December 7, 1636 in Watertown, Mass. Shortly after, the family removed to Concord, where he was made constable on December 8, 1638. He was probably the brother of Henry and Joshua Brooks who were in Concord at the same time. His occupation was that of a blacksmith.

He was captain of the Concord Company of 1659, deputy for Concord several times between 1642 and 1662, and was appointed "to sell wine & any sort of strong liquor" in 1654. Thomas signed the pledge to Assist in Maintaining the Charter in 1664 and was called a "person with estate".
He owned land in Medford jointly with his son-in-law, Timothy Wheeler. On October 22, 1664, he sold his farm in Concord and died there less than three years later.

He died interstate (without a will) and his estate was probated on June 16, 1667. His inventory, by Dea. Merriam, Dea. Potter, and GEORGE WHEELER, amounted to £448 3s., and his debts to £26 5s. 2d. In the settlement of his estate, the following heirs were mentioned: Joshua Brooks (his eldest son who received a double portion), Captain Timothy Wheeler, (his son-in-law), Caleb & Gershom Brooks (remaining sons who shared equally).

Known children of Capt. Thomas & Grace Brooks:
Hannah or Anna (Brooks) Fox
Joshua Brooks
Caleb & Gershom Brooks (twins)
Mary (Brooks) Wheeler
Hugh Brooks (not living in 1667)
John Brooks (not living in 1667)
