Fred G. Nearing, 72, of Midland, died Saturday morning, Dec. 13, 2014, at MidMichigan Medical Center. He was born Aug. 2, 1942, in Gladwin, son of the late Vernon Nearing and Doris (Wolford) Nearing of Midland.
Fred graduated from Midland High School in 1962 and then joined the U.S. Army, retiring in 1983 as a sergeant first class. During his career with the Army he served in infantry and aviation divisions, received certification and training as a fixed wing aircraft mechanic, spent three tours in Vietnam and was a purple-heart recipient.
On May 6, 1967, Fred married the former Sandra Jean Falkenstein in Midland. An avid fisherman, Fred enjoyed his Ford trucks, McDonald's coffee, and was a member of the American Legion Berryhill Post #3651.
Fred is survived by his son, Melvin Nearing of Macomb; and daughter, Debbie (Bob) Magnuson of Flowery Branch, Ga.; grandchildren, William Nearing, Samantha Nearing, Logan Magnuson and Sarah Magnuson; nieces and nephews, Chris (Roger) Heath, Jeffery Falkenstein and Beth Chiola; great-nieces and nephews, Megan Heath, Mitchell Heath, Madeline Chiola; and his mother-in-law, Leona Falkenstein of Midland. In addition to his father, Fred was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra, on Sept. 9, 2012.
Funeral services for Fred will take place 11 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2014, from the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 W. Wheeler St. Interment will follow in Midland Memorial Gardens with full military honors presented under the auspices of the Midland Area Veterans and the U.S. Army Department of the Army. Fred's family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and again on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until time of the service. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Toni & Trish House or the charity of their choice .
