Individual Details
Isaiah Payne
(1735 - 12 May 1818)
A grand-daughter, Lythia Cox, married Henry Machen. She would probably be the daughter of Nancy Cox shown in the will.
There is some confusion about the birth order of the children. I personally prefer the order of Isaiah's will of 1815. Carolyn Adams and Edna Wise Prickett have differing information on the numbers of children and number of wives. I hope someone out there can help to verify this information. Isaiah probably had at least two brothers. These brothers are proposed as being Thomas Payne and Nehemiah Payne.
1753, Sept 3 - Isaiah Payne receives a land grant of fifty acres for "Isaiah's Choice" in Dorchester County, Maryland. [Coldman. page 211. Ref. YS*/678;BC11/242]
1753, Aug 10 - Thomas Payne files for "That or None" of fifty two acres in Frederick County, Maryland. Ref. BC1/368;BC2/133[Coldman page 211]
1756, Sept 16 - Daniel Payne files a land grant of fifty acres for "Hog Pen Landing" in Dorchester County, Maryland. Ref. BC10/266;BC11/242 [Coldman page 211]
1758- Isaiah sells "Isaiah's Choice" and seems to be prepared to move to North Carolina by 1764. [Edwards p. 241]
1778- Isaiah was living in Orange County, North Carolina on the Haw River. Nearby were Isaiah's brothers Thomas and Nehemiah Payne as well as several of Isaiah's sons. [Edwards p. 241]
1790 - Isaiah Payne purchases 73 acres on Golden Grove Creek in Greenville County, South Carolina. This property was next to James Seaborn with the deed witnessed by Henry Machen and Aaron Payne, son of Isaiah.
