Born in Indianapolis, Indiana and the youngest of six children of Helen D. Lowes Dobson and Martin James Dobson. He was married to Lola Carlyne Skaggs and they had two children, Robert Russell Dobson and Dorothy Helen Dobson. He served in WWII as a Navy pilot on Attu in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska.
