Dr. Samuel Jackson Latimer

Dr. Samuel J. Latimer, a leading physician of Dallas Co., Missouri was born in Washington Co., Missouri April 22, 1833; being the son of Samuel and Nancy(Bottom) Latimer, both natives of Kentucky.
The father was born December 19, 1795 and died in Webster Co., Missouri July 19, 1873. He had followed agriculture pursuits, and was first married to Miss. Elizabeth Garrett, who died in Missouri. He afterward married Mrs. Day, who was the widow of John Day, and who's madien name was Bottom. She was born July 18, 1797, and died in Webster Co., Missouri December 15, 1885.
After his second marriage Mr. Latimer and wife lived in Macoupin Co., Illinois a short time, and then moved to Washington Co., Missouri, where they resided until November 1837. At that date they moved to Webster(then Polk)Co., Missouri. Settling on Niangua Creek, and while living on one farm he was a resident of three different counties.
He as a Democrat in politics and he and his wife were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. He held numerous minor offices in Washington Co., Missouri; and was one of the much esteemed citizens of the county. His father Jacob Latimer was a native of Virginia, who went to Kentucky with Daniel Boone and helped fight Indians at Crab Orchard.
To Samuel Latimer and second wife were born a large family of children: five of whom are now living. Dr. Samuel J being the eldest. The others were named as follows: Margaret Ann and Martha Ann(twins), William H and Jacob L (twins), and Lydia M.(deceased).
By his first marriage Mr. Latimer became the father of one son, Dr. G.W. Latimer and two daughters; the last only living: Adaline and Nancy G.
By her first marriage to Mr. Day, Mrs. Latimer became the mother of five sons and one daughter; three are now living: Edward, Allen, and Hiley.
Dr. Samuel J. Latimer received his education chiefly at home, and at hte age of 19 began teaching school in Dallas Co. The he continued at irregular intervals for several years. From 1852 to 1856 he was engaged in teaching school, attending school as a student, or filling the place of salesman in general merchandise at St. Luke, Newburg, and Breezeville, Missouri.

LIFE STORY OF DR. SAMUEL LATIMER: SON OF SAMUEL JACKSON LATIMER.
At home near Long Lane, Dallas Co., Missouri April 22, 1880. I hereby bequeth to my children and friends on this above written date the following brief sketch of my life. I was born April 22, 1833 near a small French village called Old Mines.
My father's name was Samuel Latimer and my mother's name was Nancy. My parents removed from Washington Co., Missouri and settled seven miles of the head spring of the middle prong of the Big Niangua River the 7th of November 1837.
On the old farm my mother now resides. She was born July 18, 1797. My father was born December 19, 1795 and died July 18, 1873. My parents were both born in the state of Kentucky. I received a limited education in common subscription school. I have been fond of good books from my childhood days. I have learned many valuable lessons at home. Taught school before I was 20 years of age. I have studied medicine principally at home and by the bedside of the sick from 1856 to 1862. Commencing practicing medicine in January 1862; and I have followed that profession principally until the present date. i was licensed to preach the gospel of the Methodist Episcopal Church South in 1858 and I am still a licenced preacher of the above named church.
I have owned the farm I now live on since the spring of 1857. I was married to Mary F. Meheffey September 13, 1855. We had five daughters and three sons born unto us. Our eldest daughter is dead and our other children are alive. I am forty seven years of age this day April 22, 1880.
Keep this in remembrance of me.
