(31 Dec 1828 - 28 Dec 1916)

"Mills County Tribune," January 1, 1917:
Joseph Haines was born December 31, 1828, in Champaign County, Ohio and died in Glenwood, Iowa, December 28, 1916.
At the age of 12 years he moved with his parents to Henry County, Iowa. He was married to Miss Jane Lloyd, daughter of James and Elizabeth Lloyd, in June 1851, who were natives of South Carolina. Eleven children were born of this union. Five of these have preceded the father in death. The surviving children are Alonzo Haines, Creston, Montana; Mrs. R. H. Rist, Glenwood; James W. Haines, Creston. Mont.; JJ Haines, Forest City, Mo.; Mrs. W. A. Beckett, Lakeside, Cal.; Mrs. E. J. Wilson, Chamberlain, SD. There are of his descendants 33 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Of his original family one brother and three sisters survive him. They are J. F. Haines, Glenwood; Mrs. Elizabeth Petty, Plattsmouth, Neb.; Mrs. Barbara Clarkson, Parkdale, Colo.; Mrs. Jerusha Ford, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.
Four or the children of Mr. and Mrs. Haines died in youth. One daughter, Mrs. Ralph McPherron, died in 1880. All of the children but one were born at Mt. Pleasant.
Mr. and Mrs. Haines moved to Mills County September 20, 1871, locating on the farm north of Tabor in Rawles Township, which continued to be their home until they retired from farm life. By hard work and thrift, Mr. Haines soon had his farm of a half section paid for, and made it one of the best in cultivation and improvements of any in the county. Mr. and Mrs. Haines retired from farm life in 1891 and moved to Tabor, where they had built a residence. Here they lived until the death of Mrs. Haines in 1892. From that time until his death Mr. Haines made his home with his children. The past 11 years he has been with his daughter, Mrs. Rist, in West Glenwood. And in that time made two trips down town. One of those trips was for the purpose of voting.
Mr. Haines was one of those men with whom it was a pleasure to visit at his home. He was endowed with the faculty of presenting the common sense facts of life and work in a manner to impress a listener. He never held official position, but held to his political principles faithfully.
Several years before his death he made an equitable division of his property among his children. He knew the fanning business in Iowa thoroughly, and his loyalty to his home county never wavered. He was not a man of many words, for he weighed well all of his utterances. Age came upon him gradually and he remained quietly at home, and a few weeks before his death took to his bed, and his weakness prevented him from rallying. No pain or impatience disturbed his rest, and on Thursday morning "tired nature yielded to the inevitable and he fell into his eternal sleep." Despite the arduous labors of his early and middle life, he enjoyed good health and lived many years beyond the Psalmist's allotment, He affiliated in early life with the Methodist Protestant Church.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 30, at 10:30 AM in the H. H. Rist home. The services were conducted by Rev. Wm. Stevenson of the Glenwood ME Church. The body was taken to Tabor for burial.
Members of the family from a distance who were present at the funeral were Mrs. E. J. Wilson, daughter, Chamberlain, SD; J. J. Haines, son, Forest City, Mo.; Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Shellhase, the latter a granddaughter, Garrison, IA.
