Hugh Aubren Smith

Hugh A. Smith, 83, of Lorena, passed away Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008, in Las Vegas, Nev. A celebration of Hugh's life will be 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Waco Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel with Thomas Aguilar officiating. Visitation will follow the service.

Hugh was born in Greenville, Texas, to the late Lester Aubren and Annie Smith. He joined the military at an early age, serving as a switchboard operator and aircraft mechanic for the 748th Bomb Squadron of the United States Army Air Corps. After serving in World War II, he became a licensed radio-telephone operator and obtained his single engine pilot's license. Hugh was a member of the M. Denton Stanford Lodge, No. 594, a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Scottish Rite and past Worthy Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star. Hugh's memberships also include the Texas Early Day Tractor and Engine Association, the American Legion and the texas Auctioneer's Association. Hugh was married to the late Avagene "Gene" Dossey Smith on Feb. 8, 1943. They spent 60 wonderful years together. After Gene's death, Hugh married his long-time friend, Wilma Roberts Smith on March 14, 2004, at age 79.

Hugh was preceded in death by his first wife, Avagene; sons, Kenneth Wayne Smith and Tommy Aubren Smith; and grandchildren, Stefany, Michael and Jimmy.

He is survived by his wife, Wilma; daughter, Betty Hugh Smith; grandchildren, Kathy Powell, Tommy Atha, Genie Burch, Ken Smith and Debra Wheeler; and nine great-grandchildren.
