Kenneth Wayne Smith Sr.

Kenneth Wayne Smith, 61, of Lorena, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2007. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, at Pecan Grove Funeral Home, Waco. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at Meadowbrook Baptist Church in Robinson with Thomas Aguilar officiating. In honor of Wayne, blue jean attire is requested.

Wayne was born in San Antonio, Texas, to the late Hugh and Gene Smith. He received his business degree from Baylor University and worked for many years in the trucking industry. His most prized accomplishment was graduating from the McLennan Community College Police Academy in 1989 and proudly serving as Deputy for the McLennan County Sheriff's Department for 14 years until his retirement. He cherished the brotherhood and friendships he made at the Sheriff's Department. Wayne was raised as a Master Mason (A.F. & A.M.) and later served as the Worshipful Mast of the James H. Lockwood Lodge #1343. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite. On Dec. 3, 1991, Wayne married his "best buddy," Diane. After retiring from the Sheriff's Department, he turned his woodworking and cabinet building hobby into a business. Through his love of this craft, many homes and businesses all over Texas have been blessed with his workmanship. Wayne's greatest love in life was giving and serving others. He never met a stranger. He was passionate about his work and his family.

Wayne was preceded in death by his mother, Gene Smith; his brother, Tommy Smith; and his son, Jim Smith.

Survivors include his loving wife, Diane Smith, of Lorena; son, Kenneth Wayne Smith, Jr., of Wheaton, Kan.; daughters, Kathy Powell and husband, Eric, of Robinson, Genie Burch and husband, Ben, of Robinson, and Debbie Wheeler and husband, Dan, of Riley, Kan.; grandchildren, Kimberly, Kayci, Tanner, Taya, Cody, Dustin, Justin and Michael; his father, Hugh Smith and wife, Wilma, of Lorena; sister, Betty Smith, of Chinle, Ariz.; and nephew, Tommy Atha of Chinle, Ariz.; and great-nephew, Preston; and his extended family, Joseph and Caroline Ashkar and Nabil and Ragada Abikar.
