John Hugh Gaston, son of Robert Kirkpatrick and Letitia [née Suddeth] Gaston, was born on November 17th 1848. John was named for his paternal great and 1st great-grandfathers. His family moved to Anderson County, Texas, in 1849, and to Mt. Sylvan, Smith County, Texas in 1860. John’s father served several terms in the Texas Legislature from Anderson County before the Civil War.

Like his siblings, John was educated at the Mound Prairie Institute. He was too young to serve during the Civil War, his three older brothers did serve… with George and Robert dying while serving.

On December 18th 1872, John Gaston married Miss Mary Elizabeth "Bettie" Miller, a daughter of John B. and Laura Caroline [née Ayres] Miller. This union was bless with the following known children:

John and Bettie Gaston moved their family to Tyler, Texas; where John was a merchant. He later moved his family to Dallas and with his brother, Wm. Henry, John Gaston entered the banking business in Dallas; serving as an officer at various banks in the area. John Gaston would also become a real estate investor and serve as a board of director of several insurance companies.

After his wife Bettie died in 1895, John married Jennie Lyne; no known children were born to this union.

John Hugh Gaston departed this life on the 16th of July 1921 at the age of 72 years. He was laid to rest in Hutchins Cemetery near his 1st wife, Bettie and two children: Augustus and Leticia White who preceded him.
