John Flavel Greer

The John F. Greer Family John F. Greer, founder of the town of Anna, was born March 17, 1830 in Waverly, Alabama. John was one of the eight children of Joseph Greer, a planter. In 1870 John settled in Old Mantua and operated a farm ther for several years. In 1878 he went back to Alabama and married Laura Ellis. With the coming of the railroad Mantua was moved from its location to a more convenient one on the railroad. John F. had the first house in the new town of Anna and was always a leader in helping to develop the town. He operated the first store in Anna, served as its mayor, postmaster, and in his private life was a member of the Presbyterian Church and a Mason. John F. and Laura Greer reared eleven children, six sons and five daughters -- Thomas E. Baxer D., James H., William Bryan, and his daughters were Mrs. James McMahan, Mrs. Herman Rutherford, Mrs. lee Mitchell, Laura Mae, and Anna Lou who was the first child born in the new town of Anna and she was given its name.
