Paul Hughes Obituary
HUGHES Hughes, Paul M., an Executive Vice-President of Revlon International and Chairman of Revlon Marketing in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Asia, died in the evening of January 19 in Boca Raton, FL. He was 74 and lived in Highland Beach. Mr. Hughes was born on April 13, 1928 in Cambridge, MA to Edward and Florence Hughes; he was the eighth of twelve children. Mr. Hughes served in the United States Marines just after WWII and was graduated from Villanova University. As a young marketing director, in his first job for a toy manufacturer, he presented the idea of selling toys in supermarkets. This was dismissed as impossible; he was told only groceries would sell in supermarkets. He went to work for Lionel Trains. In 1967, he met Charles Revson, who persuaded him to come try his hand at cosmetics. Mr. Hughes began a twenty-five year career with Revlon in London as managing director of Revlon U.K. He revolutionized marketing strategies there, and Revlon soared to the top in Great Britain. The "Natural Wonder" line created a color palette in his honor. The Moody Hues, all smoky blues and grays and greens. He went on from London to the Far East, where he kept homes in Tokyo and in Jakarta, Indonesia. In Tokyo, he met his second wife, Jessica Wirstrom of Sweden, who was there working as a fashion model, after being spotted by a scout in Stockholm. Mr. and Mrs. Hughes divided their time for the next fifteen years between Tokyo, Jakarta, and New York. Their three children Paula Victoria, Paul Frederick and and Christopher Thomas were all born at New York Hospital. In 1991, Mr. Hughes retired from Revlon and made a home in Boca Raton with a view of the fairway. There he perfected his golf game and started Hughes International Development Corporation. Just recently he bought a new home in Highland Beach with the water vistas, especially of the ocean in stormy weather, he loved so much. On Saturday morning, January 26, at 11:00, friends and family from around the world will gather at St.Lucy's to remember him. See www.paul hughes.com for details. Mr. Hughes is survived by his wife, Jessica; two daughters Mary-Beth Hughes of Brooklyn, NY; Paula Victoria Hughes of New York, NY; two sons Paul Frederick Hughes of Lexington, KY and Christopher Thomas Hughes of Highland Beach, FL. He is predeceased by his son, Paul Mary Hughes, Jr. His first marriage to Patricia McCrane ended in divorce. His sisters Florence, Agnes, Mary, and Claire; and brothers William, Joseph and Thomas also survive him. Arrangements by KRAEER FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER 1353 N. Federal Hwy.
