Washington Times, The (DC) - December 16, 2000
Deceased Name: William Calomiris, 80, past trade panel chief
William Calomiris, 80, a prominent real estate entrepreneur and former president of the Greater Washington Board of Trade, died of cancer Dec. 13 at Georgetown University Medical Center.
Mr. Calomiris was a lifelong resident of the District. He was chairman of the board and chief executive officer of William Calomiris Investment Corp., a real estate brokerage, development and management company he started in 1940. After serving in the Marine Corps in the Pacific during World War II, Mr. Calomiris returned to the District and expanded his real estate business. He remained the top executive at his company until his death.
Mr. Calomiris also was prominent in banking circles. He served as director of Lincoln National Bank and Jefferson Federal Savings and Loan, advisory director to Riggs National Bank, and chairman of the board of Washington Federal Savings Bank. He was instrumental in helping create the Greater Atlantic Bank in 1997.
The son of Greek immigrants, Mr. Calomiris dropped out of Eastern High School to help support the family after his father's death. He first worked as a baker's apprentice at Continental Bakers in the District, then started a rooming house business - renovating an old home and renting out rooms on a weekly basis.
In 1962, Mr. Calomiris became chairman of the United Givers Fund, a precursor to the United Way. Following the 1968 riots in the District, as head of the Board of Trade he led efforts to rebuild the inner city, established summer programs for inner-city youth, and helped develop low- and moderate-income housing in Prince George's County.
In 1964, Mr. Calomiris became a founder of Honor Every Responsible Officer's Eternal Sacrifice, Inc. (HEROES), an organization dedicated to helping families of District firefighters and police officers killed while on duty. He was the organization's senior vice president and chairman, and set up a program to provide college scholarships to the children of slain firefighters and police officers.
Mr. Calomiris was chairman of the National Capital YMCA Committee of Management from 1978 until 1982 when he was named to its board of directors. Because of his financial and leadership contributions to the YMCA, a new center was established in 1994 and named the YMCA Calomiris Center in his honor.
Mr. Calomiris was an avid racquetball player well into his 70s. He also was an active supporter of the D.C. Youth Leader Corps, and an archon of the Greek Orthodox Church. He was a member and president of the board of trustees of the Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church.
