Mary Diakomis Stathis, 78, made her transition on March 12, 2003 near her home in Clearwater, FL. She was born in Monessen, PA on Oct. 28, 1924. Her husband, Gus Stathis, of Chicago, IL and Clearwater, FL, as well as her daughter, Georgia Stathis of Pleasant Hill, CA, survive her. She is also survived by five grandchildren, to whom she is known as "yiayia" starting with James Stathis, 24, Timothy Stathis, 17 and Meghan Stathis, 15 of Chicago and Alexandra Maria Nunes, 21 and Gus John Nunes, 18 of Pleasant Hill, CA. She is also survived by her loving sister and brother-in- law, Bessie Diakomis Komondorea and George Komondorea of Tennessee. Additional survivors are Toula and George Stathopoulos (her brother-in-law); and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Mary Stathis had survived her son, James Stathis, who passed away in 1998; George Diakomis, her brother, who passed in 1970; and her parents, Anna Kossenas and John Diakomis of New York City. A wife and homemaker prior to marrying, Mary Stathis, who grew up in New York City, worked for the war effort in World War II making 5 mm bullets for the servicemen abroad. Always a proponent of education, she also worked for the American Schools of Correspondence prior to marriage. In High School she was offered scholarships for college to continue in both science, as well as art, where she painted the "Blue Hills of Pennsylvania", but chose to go to work to help her parents during the Great Depression of the United States. She was a past president and member of many Greek Orthodox Women's organizations including The Daughters of Penelopes, Ahepa and St. Helen Women's Philoptochos. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in the name of Mary Stathis to either St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Oak Lawn, IL; St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church in Palos Heights, IL or SS. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Palos Heights, IL. STATHIS, MARY DIAKOMIS, 78, of Clearwater, died Wednesday (March 12, 2003) at Morton Plant Hospital, Clearwater. She was born in Monessen, Pa., and came here in the 1980s from Chicago. She was a homemaker and during World War II worked in a factory making bullets. She was an artist. She was a past president and member of several church women's organizations. She attended Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Clearwater. Survivors include her husband, Gus; a daughter, Georgia Stathis, Pleasant Hill, Calif.; a sister, Bessie Diakomis Komondorea, Tennessee, and five grandchildren.
