Catherine celebrated her birthday on March 10, which is the day she said her mother told her she was born. Her birth certificate lists March 12. The doctor may not have gone to city hall and registered her birth for two days afterwards. We are using March 12 on her records to reconcile with the official records.

STORY:
Sunday night Oct 30 1938... My mother and Aunt Kay, listenedto the original "War of the Worlds". My Uncle Bill came rushing hom ea couple of hours later worried about an alien invasion. As always the graciousbig sisters (NOT!), they laughed and teased him unmercifully for years after!

Mom always said she was born on March 10. When she was getting ready to retire and had to send in a copy of her birth certificate to Social Security, the date was March 12. When she saw this, she said "My mother would know what date I was born. Maybe the doctor didn't register me for a couple of days after I was born." As family, we decided to use Mom's "official" government-issued birthdate of March 12, for official documents to avoid problems with date discrepancies.

Residence

First apartment after marriage was at 78 Hewes Street, Williamsburg, Brooklyn. A Greek family named Katchoulas had bought a house for his three children that was two blocks away from my parents' house.  The father owned an ice cream parlor and he had a son and a daughter getting married within months of each other.  He was frantic because he didn't know where his kids were going to live, so he decided to buy a brownstone on 37 Hewes Street. It had been a one-family house but he had plans to turn it into four apartments, two would go to his children and he would rent the other two.  Each apartment was on a separate floor andhad its own kitchen, but the bathrooms had to be shared.  When we heard about this, we approached him about the possiblity of renting and he agreed to give us the attic apartment.  We rented it for four years. (from Andrew Kostakos Personal History)

Catherine was born on March12, 1917 in Hoboken, New Jersey, the oldest child of Louis Pappas(Papagiannakos) and Angelina Eftaxas. She married Andrew John Kostakos onNovember 14, 1946 in Brooklyn, New York. They lived in Brooklyn, thenHillsdale, New Jersey, before moving to Kensington, Maryland in 1961. Catherinelived in Leisure World, Silver Spring, Maryland from 2001 until her move toSunrise Assisted Living in Silver Spring in 2011. She worked as a secretary from 1936-1946 at: WPA, New York City, Shulton, Hoboken NewJersey, U.S. Testing Company, New York City; and as a bookkeeper and floral arranger for Marjay and then P&S Florists, Kensington, Maryland from1984-1990. Catherine was a volunteer at Holiday Park Senior Center in Wheaton and a member of Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church inWashington, D.C. Funeral arranged by Philip D.
