Email from George Georgas to Carol Petranek, May 18, 2018, describing family photo: My father was in the Greek navy during the Balken Wars. I remember him telling me that he was sent away from home at age 9, to an uncle on the island of Sira, because they couldn't afford to keep all of the 5 or 6 children they had. He joined the navy to get away After his service, he returned home for the first time, after being away about 16 years, to see his parents, and to tell them he was coming to America. My guess is that this picture was taken during that visit. The next time he saw them was 39 years later.Census
