NOTES:
Peter Pappas – contact with Carol Petranek, May 2016
Peter is 80 years old. He lives in Michigan. He was on Facebook, looking for a Carol Papagiannakos who his brother’s son is remarried to. My name popped up and he contacted me.
Peter knows the Papagiannakos family back to his grandfather, Christos, but not beyond. He said that when he was a teenager, hisfather told him that the original name of the family was Maltsiniotis. In thelate 1800’s, one of our ancestors, Ioannis, had a nickname, “Giannakos”. Hebecame a priest, and the name changed to Papagiannakos. Peter said thatGiannakos was either his father’s grandfather or great-grandfather. He knowsabout the Maltsiniotis tower/house in Agios Ioannis; he said it was called “thePyrgos” (the tower).
Peter said that there were 3 brothers: Nikolaos,Panagiotis and Christos. Their father was Ioannis.
Father Eugene is a descendant of Nikolaos.
Peter is a descendant of Christos.
[The Tassos (Anastasios) Papagiannakos who contacted mein 2011 is a descendant of Panagiotis]
Peter is the grandson of Christos Papagiannakos marriedto Georgia. Peter is the son of Konstantinos Papagiannakos and Kannella Savvouras. His siblings are: Georgia, Eugenia, Panagiota, Christos, Kaliope. His sister, Georgia, stayed in Greece and theothers all emigrated to Nova Scotia, Canada. Eugenia died in Montreal, Canada;Panagiota still lives in Nova Scotia; Kaliope died in Canada in 1959.
Peter left Greece in 1953. In 1969, he left Nova Scotiaand moved to Detroit, and his brother, Christos, left Nova Scotia and moved toLong Island. After he and his brother left Nova Scotia, his parents went backto Greece. After his mother died, his father returned to Canada and lived withhis sister until he died. [which sister?]
When Jimmy Pappas (married to Kaliopi Kostakos) would visitGreece, he would bring his Buick, and also food. Peter said that when he wentto high school, it was in Sparta (not Agios Ioannis) and he would walk threemiles each way back and forth. Uncle Jimmy would drive him to school in hisBuick.
On June 10, 2016, I visited Father Eugene Pappas at ThreeHierarchs Church in Brooklyn, NY. We called Peter and he and Father Eugenespoke. They verified that they each heard the Maltsiniotis story; they bothknew Jimmy Pappas; they enjoyed their phone conversation.
Peter said he would take a DNA test, and I ordered onefor him in June 2016.
We want to see if we are of the same family. There were several Nikolaos Papagiannakos in Agios Ioannis about the same time.
***
He owned 3 restaurants: one in Canada; and two in Michigan. He sold the last restaurant in 1989 and became a banquet chef or 20 years at a country club in Michigan. The country club would close from December until April 1, and then he would go to Florida for the winter. Now, he splits his time between Arizona where lives and Florida, where lives.

I went to school for two years in Gounari. For first grade and second grade, I went to school in Gounari because I stayed with my grandparents there. Then when I got older, I didn’t want to stay there anymore so I came back home and went to the Agios Ioannis school for one year. When they found out I was not born in Agios Ioannis, and my father refused to register me as an Agios Ioannis resident, they kicked me out. I went to Sikaraki and I graduated from Sikaraki and then I went to high school. Peter Pappas to Carol Kostakos Petranek, April 5, 2019

Peter Pappas (Panayiotis Papagiannakos), born on March 1, 1935 in Sparta, Greece, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2024. He was the beloved son of Kostandinos Papagiannakos and Kanella Savouras and is predeceased by his siblings Georgia, Evgenia, Panayiota, Christo, and Kalliopi. He was Peter or Panayiotis but everyone called him “Pete.” Pete shared an extraordinary love with his wife of 62 years, Fevronia Pappas (nee Mareskas). They met in Montreal as strangers and immigrants from nearby towns in Greece, emigrated to Detroit, Michigan in 1969 and built a wonderful life together. Their devotion and commitment to each other was absolute. They were soulmates to the end. Together, they raised two daughters, Nellie (Howard) Camerik and Lilly (Ted) Kariotoglou, and instilled in them a strong work ethic, a love of travel and adventure, unwavering love for family and friends, a strong sense of community and faith, the importance of responsibility and perseverance (he was the master of “never giving up”) and a thirst for knowledge. He was deeply committed to his family and made many sacrifices to make sure that his daughters had every opportunity and advantage that he never had. His love and pride for his grandchildren, Dana Camerik, Lindsay Camerik, Katerina Kariotoglou and Dimitri Kariotoglou, was limitless and, despite the geographical distance, he was fortunate and incredibly grateful to have been able to spend so much time with them in Florida and Arizona as they grew up.
Having come from humble beginnings, Pete was amazed at the life he built for himself and his family in the United States, with a high school education but with hard work and a belief that “in this country, you can do anything.” He was a proud American who loved to learn about history and his bucket list visit to Pearl Harbor was a highlight. He traveled to many places including Greece, Italy, Turkey and Israel but his favorite place of all was Jerusalem, a place that brought him closer to his Greek Orthodox faith. He was a master chef, owning and working in restaurants throughout his life, but he saved his best meals for family and friends. He worked until his mid-seventies and believed that hard work kept him young. He was a man of integrity and despite his soft-spoken manner, he was often the voice of reason and a calming force. Way ahead of his time and with many strong women in his life, Pete believed that women should have unlimited opportunities. He appreciated life's simple pleasures and never took anything for granted. Pete will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather (“papou”) and friend who will be deeply missed. His legacy will live on in the lives he touched and the family and friends he cherished.
The family will receive visitors at Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church, located at 36375 Joy Road, Westland, Michigan on Wednesday, October 16, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a Trisagion Service at 6:00 p.m. and from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. on October 17, 2024. The funeral service will take place at Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church at 10:00 a.m., October 17, 2024 at 9:00 a.m. He will be laid to rest at Parkview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church.
