"Merced County California Funeral Book 1877-1896", copy at the Tulare City Library, states that Mary C. McConnell, age 11, born Cal., residence Cressey [Merced County], died 28 Jul 1878, buried 29 Jul 1878, Modesto Cemetery, drowned. Randy, at the Modesto Cemetery Association, confirmed 18 Apr 2006 that she is buried there, has a stone and the location of the grave. Harriet A. McConnell is in the same lot. Author noted that another 11 year old girl, Jennie Murphy, died the same day, also by drowning, and is also buried in Modesto. Probably the two were playing in the river together. However, the cemetery listing at USGENWEB doesn't show a Jennie Murphy in the cemetery. Either that information was accidentally copied for her, or possibly she was buried in the same Lot as the McConnell family but burial wasn't recorded.
