Robert S. Marcotte

OXFORD - Robert Seraphin Marcotte, most recently of Oxford, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 23, 2013, while surrounded by his loving family. He was 80.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Betty Lou Marcotte; son Robert; daughter-in-law Elizabeth and grandchildren Nathan and Julia Marcotte of Great Falls, Va.; daughter Anne-Marie Starr and grandson Alexander Robert Starr of Richmond, Va.; and Katherine Marcotte of Gaithersburg, Md. He was preceded in death by his brother, David Marcotte, M.D., of Charlotte, N.C., and is survived by a sister, Suzanne Lent, of Wauwatosa, Wis.

Born in Bloomfield, N.J., in 1932, he graduated from the University of Vermont in 1954, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta. He entered the U.S. Army in 1954 and graduated from Officer Candidate School in 1955.

He began his career in the life insurance business at Bankers National Life Insurance Company in Montclair, N.J. and moved to Potomac, Md., in 1968 when he joined Equitable Life Insurance Company as vice president of data processing. He was promoted to executive vice president and then president of Equitable in 1982. After Equitable was acquired by American General in 1983, Bob assumed the role of executive vice president of marketing for American General and was later appointed the president of Hawaiian Life Insurance Company in Honolulu in 1989. After assisting with the sale of Hawaiian Life in 1992, Bob retired to the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

An avid golfer, Bob was a member of Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md., and later Talbot Country Club in Easton, Md. He and Betty Lou had recently relocated back to Montgomery County at Asbury Methodist Village.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, at the DeVol Funeral Home, 10 East Deer Park Drive, Gaithersburg, Md.
