"Vic E. Koleber, Donie, TX, a retired newspaper publisher, died Dec. 11, 2002 at Parkview Regional Hospital, Mexia, TX, at 91 year of age.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law Vicki and Billy Turner, of Donie, and a number of nieces and nephews. His wife Ethel Etta, died May 2,, 1992. They were married Sept. 21, 1932 in Wichita, KS. His grandson James Ralph Massey died in 1981.
Koleber was born Feb. 9, 1911, in WaKeeney, Trego County, Kans. His parents were the late Johann Georg and Katherine Elizabeth (Dietz) Koleber, pioneer Western Kansas wheat farmers. He was the last of a large family of seven brothers and one sister.
Koleber was a graduate of Dague Business University, Wichita, Kans. He spent the first 14 years of his 40 year newspaper career with daily papers. He started in 1932 with the Wichita, Kans. Beacon. In 1935-36 he worked for the San Antonio Express and Evening News. He joined the staff of the Edinburg Valley Review in 1937 and became general manager and acting publisher in 1942.
For 26 years, 1946 until 1972, he was owner-publisher of weekly papers. They were The Florence Citizen, Florence, Colo., The Goldthwaite Eagle, and The Teague Chronicle in Texas. After selling their last newspaper, The Goldthwaite Eagle in 1971, Mr. and Mrs. Koleber retired to Waco. In 1979 they moved to Donie.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Donie. He was ordained a Deacon in 1940. He served as S. S. Director, Training Union Director, Finance and Budget Director and chairman of a special committee for Capital Improvements with plans and finance drive for a new Educational Building at First Baptist Church in Edinburg, Texas.
A community and civic booster throughout his career, Koleber served on boards and held office in the Chamber of Commerce Civic Service Clubs,School Board, Community Industrial Council and other organizations.
In 1948 he was presented the annual Man of the Year Civic Service award in Florence, Colo. He was a Benefactor Charter Member of the Champions of Hope, West Texas Boys Ranch, San Angelo. Koleber was appointed to regional State Committees by former governors Allan Shivers and Preston Smith.
His name, Victor Emanuel Koleber, is inscribed on the American Immigrant Wall of Honor at Ellis Island, N.Y. The wall was erected by the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation during their 1989 restoration project. He represents his parents, Germans from Russia,who arrived in the U.S., in 1905, and were processed through Ellis Island. His father served in the army of Nicholas, the last Czar of Russia.
