He served in the army of Nicholas, the last Czar of Russia, according to the obituary of his son, Vic.

Western Kansas World, WaKeeney, KS, May 22, 1952:
" George Koleber Sr., age 76 years, passed away Wednesday morning at the hospital in Ft. Collins, Colo., following several months of failing health. Mr. Koleber will be remembered as a farmer [sic] resident of Trego county.
Funeral services will be held at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in WaKeeney on Sunday, May 25th 15 2:00 p.m., and burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery at Trego Center."

Western Kansas World, WaKeeney, KS, May 29, 1952:
"George Koleber Sr. was born December 6, 1874, in the Colony of Kratzka, Province of Saratow, Russia. By his Christian parents he was brought to the church for baptism, as was their custom. He received his religious instruction in the village school and church and was confirmed in 1890. He was united in marriage to Katherine Elizabeth Dietz in 1894. To this union 8 children were born, 7 sons and 1 daughter.
In the year 1904 the Koleber family came to the United States. Making their home in Russell, Kansas for two years, followed by four years in Rockyford, Colorado, then returning to Kansas where they lived on a farm near WaKeeney for the next 24 years.
In the year 1929 Mrs. Koleber died, leaving behind her husband, six sons and one daughter. One son had passed away prior to her death.
In 1931 he entered into holy matrimony with his present wife, Mary Elizabeth, nee Mehling. In 1934 they moved to Fort Collins and have been at home at 141 third st.
He passed away Wednesday morning at the age of 77 years, 5 months and 15 days, after a long illness. He had been in the Larimer county hospital for two months. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, six sons: George Koleber Jr. of WaKeeney, Kansas; Fred Koleber of Eaton,Colo.; Henry of Houston, Texas; Emanuel of Florence, Colo.; Emil of Richland, Wash.; Albert of Fort Lupton; one daughter, Mrs. Mollie Margheim of Hoisington, Kansas; 23 grand children and 15 great grandchildren; 4 step sons and 2 step daughters with their 16 children and 6 grand children.
Funeral Services were held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in WaKeeney on Sunday afternoon, with Dr. K. de Freese and Rev. Rudolph Moehring officiating. Interment at Zion Lutheran Cemetery at Trego Center."
