John JONES
(Abt 1747 - Bet 18 Jul 1806 and 9 Aug 1806)
1793 Juniata Twp., Cumberland Co., PA, tax list: John Jones, B. Smith.
300 acres; 3 horses, 4 cows and 1 saw mill.
1795 Juniata Twp., Cumberland Co., PA, tax list: John Jones, B Smith, 260 acres; 3 horses, 4 cows, 1 saw mill.
1802 Juniata Twp., Cumberland Co., PA, tax list: John Jones, 210 acres; 1 horse, 4 cows, 1 saw mill. Joseph Jones and Thomas Jones listed by him. John Jones, farmer, was listed as "freemen" this year.
1805 Juniata Twp., Cumberland Co., PA, tax list: John Jones, Sen.: 200 acres, 2 horses, 4 cows, 1 saw mill. John Jones Jun. listed next to him.
In 1808 tax list, Ann Jones, widow, is taxed for one cow. Also listed are Thomas Jones, Mary Jones Heirs, John Jones, Joseph Jones and Benjamin Jones.
Birth dates and places, for this entire family, except Nancy Agnes, are from a family group sheet in the IGI. Not verified, so here for working purposes only There were no spouses mentioned in the list of children, only first names and year and place of birth. Son John Jones was shown to have died 5 Apr 1848, but he was the only child with a death date. John Sr. had a death date, but wife Agnes did not. Need to support all information unless otherwise cited.
Subsequently, a copy of the John Jones chart at the Lenig Library was provided to me. It gave additional names, including children and grandchildren in some cases, along with some dates. Still unverified and the birth date for son Joseph is quite a bit different and that of son John two years different. The chart also says that John Jones settled in Chester Co. about 1735 (West Nantmeal Twp.) and in Perry Co. about 1774. The chart didn't have a birth date for him, just a death date, but if he wasn't born until 1747, the first date must be incorrect.
After the above, a copy of the will has been obtained and that lists children. See below.
Abstract of Will of John Jones, a blacksmith, of Juniata Township, Cumberland County, Pa., mentioned:
his Wife - Ann
Sons Joseph
John
Thomas
Benjamin
Joshua
Daughters Nancy Vincent
Mary Harvey
Rebecca
Sarah
Executors named: Wm. Bull and Isaac Craven
Witnesses: Alexander and Robert Garrett
Will written July 18, 1806; proven Aug. 9, 1806
Copy of abstract from the Perry Historians, Lenig Library, stamped "Fleisher Collection".
The above abstract supports the children named.
A public tree at ancestry in 2010 is showing John Jones b. 1747 in PA; died 14 Aug 1806 at Now, Perry Co., PA. It shows his wife as Agness Ryain, born 1751 in Chongqing, Chongqing Shiqu, Chongqing, China and her death 1810 also at Chongqing, Chongqing Shiqu, Chongqing, China. That is strange - and there is no supporting information. Most likely whoever entered it didn't notice that and it was an auto-fill entry.
The bio of Alvin Jones on page 1262 of Biographical Encyclopedia says that Alvin's gr-grandfather is Joseph Jones and doesn't name a wife. The dates don't make sense here. Joseph born before John and Agnes married and when John was only 18? The bio says this is Joseph, not John. That bio also lists mostly the same siblings as I have for John and Agnes.
