IN MEMORIAM of "Aunt Susie" Powell
Susan E. Powell, daughter of Jacob and Mary Hunter was born inWilliamson County, Illinois, March 15, 1840, and died in her home inJohnston City, Jan. 19, 1927 at the ripe old age of 86 years 10 monthsand 4 days.
She was married to John R. Powell December 20, 1860, who died in 1899,after which she located in Johnston City where she spent the years ofher widowhood until death claimed her.
She is survived by a son W. T. Powell of Chicago, two brothers, G. W.Hunter of Marion and J. M. Hunter, Galatia, and two sisters; Mrs.Lucinda Newton of Johnson City and Mrs. Sarah Aikman, of Marion; alsothree grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, who reside inChicago. She also leaves several nephews and nieces.
"Aunt Susie" as she was familiarly called, received a ......Fellowship of Pleasant Hill church of Primitive of Old School Baptistby the pastor and nephew, Elder Charles M. Weaver, in shich body shelived a faithful and devoted member till death. She contributedliberally in a financial way to her church, having bought the lotwhere the church stands, besided giving the most of the money withwhich the congregation purchased the house in which they worship. Shewas afflicted the last five years of her life with sciatic rhematismin one of her lower limbs and though she seldom was free from pain,she endured her affliction heroically and with a wonderful degree ofpatience kept her sunny disposition even unto the last hour of herlife. All who knew Aunt Susie loved her and will greatly miss her.Williamson County has lost one of its most worthy and honored citizensin the taking away of Aunt Susie Powell.
Funeral services were conducted for her by Elder ...... and her nephewCharles M. Weaver, in the presence of a large sorrowing andsympathizing congregation at the Primitive Baptist church on Friday,Jan. 21, at 1 o'clock, after which interment was made in the Masoniccemetery where she rests besdie her husband, waiting the call of theLord when He comes to make up his jewels and take her home to dwellwith him in the Lord that is forever (C. She was married to John R. Powell (son of James Thomas Powell andElizabeth Perry) on 20 Dec 1860. John R. Powell was born in 1839 inWilliamson County, Illinois. He was a prisoner at the ConfedratePrison in 1864 in Andersonville, Georgia. He appeared on the census on30 Jun 1880 in Jeffersonville, Williamson County, Illinois.(707) Hedied in 1899. He was buried in Old Town Cemetery, Williamson County,Illinois.
J. R. POWELL DEAD
J. R. Powell died of consumption at his home in old town last Fridayat 12:30 o'clock. Mr. Powell was 59 years of age.
Funeral services were conducted by Elder James Williams at the familyresidence.
Interment at old town cemetery.
Mr. Powell's death has caused a gloom of sorrow over this vicinity,where he was known and esteemed by all. He was one of those who madefriends of all and was kind and generous to the poor so there is ajust cause that he should be missed.
He was not a member of any church, but stated that he was not afraidto die.
Susan Elizabeth Hunter and John R. Powell had the following children:
