"Head-On Crash kills Fresnan, Daughter"
"Dos Palos - Mrs. Cornelia D. Guertin, 49 [sic], of 3924 E. Donner St., Fresno, and her daughter, Mrs. Catherine N. Hensler, 20, of San Francisco, were killed at about 7 o'clock last evening when the station wagon driven by Mrs. Guertin slammed head on into a truck-trailer rig. The accident occurred on Highway 152, near Red Top and about 10 miles northeast of Dos Palos.
Officers said Mrs. Hensler was pregnant.
The driver of the truck, Joseph P. Stemmler, 48, of Santee, was uninjured.
Mrs. Esther Vega, and her sister-in-law, Mrs. Cenayda Herrera, both 34 and of Planada, were taken to the Dos Palos Community Hospital with minor injuries, however, when the car in which they were riding figured secondarily in the smash-up. Mrs. Vega's husband, Joe P. Vega,38, the driver, who was following Mrs. Guertin's eastbound vehicle, swerved to avoid the initial pileup and struck a bridge railing.
The Highway Patrol says Mrs. Guertin unaccountably allowed her car to drift into the westbound lane and struck the big truck rig, which was loaded with furniture. Her body and that of her daughter were pinned in the wreckage about a half hour.
Funeral services for the two women will be held tomorrow at 9:30 a.m.in St. James Episcopal Cathedral. Burial will be in Belmont Memorial Park. The Stephens & Bean Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements."
