Individual Details
Mary DIXON
(Bet 1846 and 1847 - Aft 1 Jun 1850)
Per gedcom:
Note: Was living with Thomas McDaniel family in 1850 Census JeffersonCounty, Iowa (page 105, ln 4)
That appears to be incorrect. There is a Mary J. Dickson, 3, listed onthe next page, with the Andrew Gregg Family. McDaniel family doeshave a Mary McDaniel, age 4. Note that the Jefferson County USGENWEBsite has a copy of a family group sheet that shows Andrew Gregg'sdaughter, Aly, married a Samuel Dickson 26 Aug 1852 and there areDicksons in the Gregg cemetery.
Same web site has a notation about a Mary Dixon married to TrumanSheldon. Dates are 1787-1876 - but that page doesn't clearly say ifthat is his birth and death years. There is information in books, butpage doesn't say where - this is Family Index.
Have entered census info for the Mary Dixon/Dickson found in census inIA in 1850 but can't be sure it is the correct Mary. Had found a Maryin 1860 that read: P.O. Colesburg, Colony Twp., Delaware Co., IA, pg.209; Mary N. Dickson, 14 (1845-46), born IA. In home of Joseph D.Walker & his family. Note that listed after her is "Missouri". Nosurname shown but no ditto marks. Age appears to be 10, male, bornIA.
Further searching at the Delaware Co., IA, USGENWEB site found a biothat indicates that Mary isn't the correct one:
" Mr. Platt was married twice. He first wedded Miss Mary E. Sloane, who died at the birth of their daughter, who is now Mrs. JennieBlanchard, of Terre Haute, Indiana. On the 24th of March, 1864, Mr.Platt was united in marriage to Miss Mary M. Dickson, who was bornJuly 17, 1846, a daughter of Missouri and Elizabeth Frances (Bragg)Dickson. As early as 1837 the father came to this state fromSpringfield, Illinois, and located at what became known as the Dicksonsettlement. Clearing the timber from a portion of his land, he madeready to erect a house for his family, who arrived the following year,in 1838. At this settlement the first post office in that part of thecounty was established. Mr. Dickson was probably the first permanentsettler in the county, although previous to the time of his arrivalthere had been white traders in this locality, one of these beingHenry Teegardner, who settled in Colony township and was killed by theIndians. Mr. Dickson was a soldier of the Black Hawk war."
