"J. FRED DEINES
Son of Fred and Maria (Boxberger) Deines, was born Jan. 20, 1881, onthe family homestead 11 miles south of Russell and departed this lifeat the City Hospital in Russell, Kansas, on March 2, 1971.
A lifelong resident and the last of the family of the original colonyof German-Russian immigrants who came here in 1876 to settle in theBender Hill community, he spent his entire lifespan of 90 years as avital member of the farming, church, civic and community activities.He was baptized in infancy and later confirmed in the Lutheral faith.He was united in marriage to Maria Magdelena Mai on August 8, 1901, inthe Lutheran Church at Milberger and assumed his role in the pioneerlife of toil, perserverance and faith that transformed the barrenplains into the rich agricultural land, modern homes and thrivingcities that we now enjoy.
There were 6 children born to this marriage, one of whom preceded himin death. He retired from active farming and moved to town in 1953.His wife and helpmate during the years of toil and struggle wasstricken with a paralytic stroke in 1947 and remained bedfast andhelpless until her death on April 28, 1956. Their oldest daughter,Elizabeth, who nursed and cared for her mother during her illness, hasalso kept house and with the help of the other children, when needed,seen to his welfare and well-being until he also suffered a lightstroke aboaut six weeks ago. He was admited to the hospital andseemingly was recovering at his home 627 E. 7th St., but had to returnto the hospital about a week ago.
To remember and mourn are the five children, Elizabeth of the home;Bernhardt, Russell; Pauline Fabrizius and Meriam Deines, both ofWaKeeney, Kansas; and Sarah Michaelis of Russell. Also 13grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren. A daughter, Ruphina,preceded him in death.

Memorial Service Conducted from St. John Lutheran Church on Thursday,March 4, 1971 at 2 p.m., Pastor Earnest Pihl officiating."
