Albert Carpenter was working in a mine, called the, Anemone, at GoldHill,
Utah, when Beulah, was born April 24, 1905, in Gold Hill Utah. She wastheir, 2nd child.
After her birth Albert and Mable, loaded up their wagon and moved toFarmington, Utah where Albert's family lived, they didn't stay therelong , as there wasn't any place to work, most of Albert's family werefarmers, and all had large family of there own. So, Albert loaded uphis wife and kids and went back to Nevada where the mines were alwayslooking for miners. By the time Beulah was 13, the Carpenter's had 6or 7 kids.
Mable and Albert were pretty strict parents. Beulah, was wild andwanted to be her own boss. She had a temper to go with her red hair, and often displayed it. She wanted to get married so she could leavehome.
Beulah's older sister Luella was dating George Ishmael and his father,Pop Ishmeal, who was around 60 and was looking for a healthy youngwife. She thought that Pop was so old that, he would let her do whatever she wanted to do.
Beulah figured by marrying Pop, she would be her own boss and could dowhat ever she wanted to. That didn't work out to well. Pop was a verydemanding old man. She could no longer go with the kids and hang outdown town or climb Beatty Mt. She had to do house work, cooking, carrywater, washing on the scrubboard, and ironing, with the old flat ironthat you heat on the stove. Pop liked white shirts, and wanted a cleanone, sometimes twice a day. She had to chop wood, and feed chickens, not to mention feeding the hogs too. Pop lived outof town on a pigfarm called the Post Ranch.
Beulah, hadn't planed on all the work that came with this marriage. Itonly took three or four months before she knew she had to leave.
After many tries and Pop always catching her, and bring her back, being a resourceful, girl, Beulah finally hit upon a plan that mightwork. Pop loved duck and chocolate cake. Beulah cookedPop a lovelydinner, wild duck with dressing, all mixed together with caster oil inthe dressing toped off with a cake. She put ferment (laxative) in thecake and the icing was made with chocolate exlax. Pop ate his fill. Itdidn't take long before theexlax started to work. Pop started for theout house. When he messed his pants, he hollered for Beulah to bringhim some clean pants. But by this time Beulah was long gone.
