Albert Ashley was the only child of Amanda Jane Dorrity .
Albert was originally baptized by Brigham Young in the river. Familytradition states that a hole was chopped in the ice and when youngBert came out of the icy water he exclaimed "Son of a B----!" Whereupon Brigham baptized him again and again he exclaimed "Son of aB----!" His father said give that boy to me and he told him, "Waituntil I get you home!" Young Bert, fearing what his father would do tohim, ran into the desert in his bare feet and wet woolen union suit.He traveled over 100 miles to his grandma Amanda Jane Acton, who fedhim and cared for him. About a week or so later his father arrived athis grandmother's place. His grandmother hid him in the flour bin. Hisfather told her that he feared that Bert was dead. She in turn toldhis father to get out, saying that he had killed her daughter and nowhad killed her grandson and she never wanted to see him again. (Shehad never forgiven his father for burying his wife alive. Seecircumstances of Amanda Jane Dorrity's death.) His mother's familyfrom that time raised Bert.
There comes a time in ones life when they really do something stupidthat they wished they had not done. I am sure that this was the casewhen Great Uncle Grant Welch and Great Grandpa Carpenter in seekingretribution or revenge of a dispute castrated a ranchers pure breadbull. They were arrested and convicted of "felony animal mutilation"in 1908 and sent to prison in Carson City, NV. they served about 9months before they received a full pardon from the Governor.
Grandpa again went to prison in 1914 when he and another fellow wasconvicted of stealing Cattle. The story they give is that because ofthe large family they only took and butchered for meat what the familyneeded to survive. One description from the prosecuting attorney wasthat he was a very tough character and had probably committed theoffence many times before he was caught, He was paroled after almost ayear to go home and take care of his family.
