"ASA SHIN FULKERTH, son of Henry and Sarah Fulkerth, was born in Woodsfield, Monroe county, Ohio, in 1833. Removed from there at the early age of seven to Morgan county, in the same State. He attended the common school, and then served an apprenticeship with his father who was a blacksmith by occupation. Remained in Morgan county until 1855, thence to Iowa, and located in Van Buren county. Worked at his trade till 1863, when owing to ill-health, he made a trip across the plains to California.
In Waterloo, San Joaquin county, the Fulkerth brothers started a blacksmith shop, but ill-health caused A. S. Fulkerth to again abandon his trade, in 1866, and he engaged in farming in San Joaquin county till 1870. The Fulkerth brothers then came to Stanislaus county and immediately began farming near Turlock. A few years later they purchased and moved onto another farm. Asa S. Fulkerth, the subject of this sketch, followed farming till 1878. He then was elected Sheriff of Stanislaus county, was re-elected in 1879, was the Democratic nominee in 1880, and is the present incumbent. He is well known and thoroughly liked throughout the whole county, and has the reputation of being a cautious, conservative man, and efficient officer.
In 1855 he married Miss Catharine McBride, and nine children have been born to them, four of whom are living - Loren W., Emma F., Etta L., and Edna Myrtize Fulkerth."
