"Marks (Marcus) Bealor (b. Jan. 9, 1760 d. April 18, 1844) m: June 28,1789 Mary Elizabeth Keiser (b. July 29, 1768 d. Jan. 21, 1852) D/O Ludwig and Elizabeth Keiser of Berks County, Penna. Marks was born and married in Brecknock Twp., Berks County, Penna. They removed to Perry County, Penna. in 1804 and bought a farm from Adam Markel, who the village is named for. Legend has it that in 1810, Marks' young daughter, Sarah, died and he buried her at the eastern fence line of his land. He then permitted other friends and family to bury their dead in the same area. The plot grew to some size by 1840. Marks deeded the section of land to the trustees of the Union Congregation of Lutherans and Presbyterians. They erected a log church that measured 30' by 40'. It was dedicated in 1841. It soon became known as Bealors' Church. In 1888, on land given by a descendant of Marks, Sarah Bealor Titzel, a new church was built and it was reformed and renamed St. John's United Church of Christ. The cemetery lies alongside the church. Marks and Elizabeth were buried in the cemetery which contains numerous members of the family." Todd cites an article in the Markelsville Gazette in 1804 and a deed recorded Aug. 24, 1840 Juniata Twp., Perry Co., PA. and another article in the same paper referencing that deed. A copy of the deed is in Todd's book.
