Pension application dated 14 Jul 1890 states he was 49 years old, fair complexion, light hair, blue eyes and 5'10" tall. Pension questionnaire dated 02 Mar 1898 lists all children still living with their birth dates. He used initials only for children. Another document in pension file shows he held the rank of Private and Sargeant in the military. Enlisted 24 Sep 1863 as a Private in Co. D of the 13th regiment of Tenn Cavalry, discharged 5 Sep 1865. Drew $12 a month pension for "deafness in right ear, pain in left side and cripple foot."
After Ham's death, his widow filed Petition for Refusal of Administration for insufficiency of property, stating he owned personal property worth $75, provisions worth $50, personal property consisting of 2 mares, 1 colt and 4 head of cattle; Wagon and some ____ __ (possibly little farm machinery); $25 cash and $18 on deposit. That the family needs $200 for 12 months.
There were death notices in two papers, both on 4 March 1909.
Cedar County Republican: "J. H. Worley died at his home near Bolivar Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock. Until a few years ago he lived in Madison township Cedar county and was a highly respected citizen and good neighbor. He served with the Union Army through the civil war and was an active member of the G. A. R. Many friends are made sad by his death."
Bolivar Herald: "J. H. Worley Dead
J. H. Worley of Huron died Monday at 4:00 p.m. The body was brought through Bolivar Tuesday on the way to his old home west of Fair Play. The funeral services were held at Lindley Prairie yesterday at 11 a.m.by Rev. D. T. Simmons of Bolivar. The remains were accompanied by the bereaved wife and a few friends from Huron to Lindley Prairie."
