Frank Winter said that the birth record for John Sherman Surby and Byrd Surby are listed as "Unknown Child" #9 and #10 respectively in the records at Hennepin. He personally confirmed that.
Per Anna Salierno, his death is shown on page 181 of "History of the Sierra" by Farquher.
Index to Death Certificates in Tulare County, California, gives death date. Certificate in Book 1 page 181.
Note, though, that the cemetery index at the Tulare County USGENWEB has this:
SURBY Byrd b. Tulare Co. d. 4 Aug 1904, age 20y 9m Office Records.
Possibly he was buried August 4.
