"H. EARL AND CLARA A. (WELLMAN) SPROUT
"Clara Amanda Wellman was born October 18, 1895, in Geneva, Nebraska, the oldest of six children of Augusta Ellizabeth Huston and GeorgeGraham Wellman. Other children in the family were: Lynn, born in 1897;Fred in 1902; Irene in 1906; Huston in 1910; and Donald in 1911. Allhave preceded her in death.
The family lived on a farm near Geneva where the predominent cropswere wheat, corn and pigs. All he work was done with horses and thewater was pumped by a windmill. Clara has told of sleet storms wherethe roads would become so covered with ice that they could skate allthe way to school. She also told of tornadoes which were veryterrifying experiences, especially before Grandpa built a stormcellar.
Herbert Earl Sprout was born in Geneva, Nebraska. July 2, 1891 to MaryEllen and Charles Edward Sprout. Earle had one brother, Lyle, who wastwo years younger. They also lived on a farm and were neighbors of theWellmans.
Earl was fond of horses and knew how to manage them. He always drovethe fastest, well-matched teams in the community, hitched to goodlooking buggies. Perhaps this helped persuade Clara to elope and theywere married in Clay Center, Nebraska, October 26, 1912. Their firstchild, Mildred, was born in Geneva, August 11, 1913.
In October of that year, drawn by tales of free land and opportunitiesto obtain great wealth by dry farming in Montana, Earl, Clara and babycame west by Northern Pacific to the little town of Wilsall. FromClara's first glimpse of the white-capped "Shining Mountains", she hasnever lost her love for the rugged peaks. The move west proved not tobe the bonanza advertised. Earle, Clara and growing family lived inseveral locations between Wilsall and Sedan during the next thirteenyears, having theier hopes shattered by drought, hail, grasshoppers, and other misforturnes. During these years their other chidren wereborn: George Edward, May 21, 1915; Herbert Lynne, April 14, 1917;Helen Irene, January 30, 1919; Raymond Charles, March 9, 1920;Harriett Elizabeth (Betty); April 17, 1922; and Norma Jean, September7, 1925.
Besides taking care of their growing famiy, Clara worked along sideEaerle in the fields, sometimes driving as many as six to eight horsesharnessed to the various farm machines necessary for the planting andharvestsing of crops. She also helped with the milking, plantedgardens, raised chickens, sewed most of the childrenn's clothing, plusall the day to day tasks of cooking, baking, washing, ironing, canning, all with none of the modern conveniences we take for granted, like runing water and electricity.
In the summer of 1926, Clara, Earle and family moved to the GallatinValley near Belgrade. They remained here until the spring of 1928 whenthey moved to the Madison Valley. Here the children grew to adulthoodand went their various ways. Mildred (Midge) was married to LewisHughes in 1936. They have one son, Larry. In 1940, George andElaine......"
