The book "The Past and Present of LaSalle County, Illinois", Chicago: H. F. Kett & Co., 1877, has a Section on the LaSalle County Civil War Record. On page 125 it lists a Wm. Sherman, enlisted 1 Dec 1861 and discharged 31 Dec 1864 as a private in Company B, under Captain Jarvis B. Smith. (Need to confirm that. My pages skip from 122 to 125 and part is on one page and part the next.) Not sure it is this William, but he is the most likely.
Death date from Anna. According to her Edward Sherman and William P.Sherman both served in the military in the Civil War.
