"Pensy RR Switchman is Killed
LOGANSPORT (Tribune Area Special) - A 35-year-old PennsylvaniaRailroad switchman was killed in the railroad's yards here earlyThursday night when he slipped from an icy-roofed, free-moving freightcar to be ground beneath its wheels.
He was identified as Raymond Shepler, lifelong resident of theLogansport community.
Fellow workers told Coroner M. B. Stewart, who investigated, they didnot see Shepler fall but found his mangled body after they saw hislantern drop.
An inquest into the death will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday in thecoroner's office.Ten witnesses will be subpoenaed, the coroner said.
Railroad officials said Shepler was riding a car on the eastbound dumpin Yard A. Ice, which formed on the tops of cars in the area, wasthought to be a factor in the switchman's loss of footing.
Shepler, a former construction worker, had been employed by therailroad for several months.
The body is at the Kroeger Funeral Home in Logansport pending funeralarrangements.
Surviving are the parents, Russell and Della (Hopper) Shepler ofLogansport; the widow, formerly Miss Helen Martin; a daughter, Sondra;three sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Bingaman of New Carlisle; Mrs. Carl Butzenof Peru; and Miss Sondra Hipsher of Logansport; two brothers, Robertand John Shepler, of near Onward.
He was born Sept. 5, 1920 at Onward, and spent his life in and aroundLogansport.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Kroeger Funeral Home withburial at Onward."

Raymond Shepler Dies Instantly When He Falls From Car During YardSwitching Operation
Inquest into the fatal accident of Raymond Shepler, 35, Pennsylvaniarailroad switchman, will be held by Coroner M. B. Stewart at 9 a.m.Tuesday at his courthouse offices. Ten witnesses have been called.
Shepler fell beneath the wheels of a free-moving freight card at about8 p.m. Thursday.
Trainmaster J. W. O'Brien said Friday Shepler was riding a car on theeastbound hump in yard A, southeast of the city, when he evidentlyfell from the brake platform. O'Brien said it had been determined thatShepler set the brake before he fell.
O'Brien said no one saw Shepler fall but other railroadersinvestigated when they saw his lantern drop. Shepler died instantly,Dr. Stewart reported.
Shepler had been a switchman with the Pennsylvania since last August.
The son of Russell and Della (Hopper) Shepler, he was born Sept. 5,1920, at Onward. He had been a lifelong resident of this community.
He resided with his wife, the former Helen Martin, and daughter,Sondra, at 111 West Ottawa street.
Also surviving are four sisters and two brothers, Miss DorothyBingman, New Carlisle; Mrs. Carol Butzen, Peru; Miss Sondra Hipsher,Logansport, and Dixie, Robert and John Shepler.
Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. M. L. Robinson, at 2p.m. Sunday at the Kroeger funeral chapel. Burial will be in Thomascemetery, Onward."
