Roger Birchard

(2 Aug 1797 - 13 Feb 1870)

Roger Birchard "was a unique character, and as a merchant in Dummerston, Vt., was reputed to carry everything under the sun in his store. This was in the days when goods had to be hauled from Boston by four and six horse team wagons. A practical joker once called at the Birchard store for a "second hand pulpit" and was surprised when Roger Birchard said he had one in the attic and produced it!"
[author?]

"I am truly sorry for Brother Roger's loss. He is so much of a philosopher that I suppose he will not allow it to trouble him much. It is always lamentable to have property destroyed by fire..."
Sophia Birchard Hayes to Sardis Birchard, July 5, 1841

"Tomorrow.. [I will] spend the night with my queer Uncle Roger [Birchard] in his queer store with his queer old goods. I shall try to buy an old-fashioned article as a specimen (say a goose yoke or a jew's harp) of his stock"
RBH to Lucy Webb Hayes, Aug. 27, 1858

"On the 5th of August [1868] last I visited Brother Roger [Birchard] with Charlotte [Birchard Dewitt] - we found him at his old store as usual but he looked very thin and feeble, though he was behind the counter waiting on customers. I had not seen him for more than two years and the change was very great. I doubt if his weight was much over 110 pounds, but he seemed active and glad to see us. His age is 71..."
Austin Birchard to Sardis Birchard, Oct. 24, 1868

Did not marry.

Article in Fremont Journal, March 18, 1870 regarding the fire that killed Birchard which was determined not to have involved foul play.
