From Timothy Tackett (timlt@msn.com)- email 8/22/2011 to Rebecca Hill:
I own a portrait of Dr. Joseph Scott (approximate age of 12) who was the son of Matthew Thompson Scott and Winifred "Winnie"Webb, of Lexington, KY. I saw in the narrative that he was in the union army.Would you have any further information about Dr. Scott (1829-1865)? The artist Oliver Frazer did a portrait of M. T. Scott about 1840, when he was the president of the Northern Trust Bank in Lexington KY (reference:JOUETT-BUSH-FRAZER, EARLY KENTUCKY ARTIST, by William Barrow Floyd). I believe the portrait I have was painted about the same time and was also painted by Oliver Frazer. According to the Lexington Gazette of 1865, Dr. Joseph Scott died suddenly on Monday morning in Springfield, IL on September 18, 1865. His funeral was at Dr. H. M. Skillman's home in Lexington KY. Dr. Henry Skillman's wife, Margaret Scott, was Joseph Scott's sister. I contacted the Archives Department at Transylvania University and Joseph Scott attended Transylvania Medical School from 1850 to 1854. In 1852 he wrote a Thesis; "The Constitutional Causes of Local Diseases". He is also listed in the 1840 KY Census Index as a member of the M. T. Scott household.
Dear Ms. Hill,
Thank you so much for your prompt reply regarding Dr.Joseph Scott. I really appreciate it. After finding the info on your website, Iresearched the IL civil war records and found a possible match that might bethis Joseph. As you said there are so many! There was a Joseph Scott who joinedthe Union Army on October 25, 1862 at Camp Butler. He was 35 years old and waslisted as a Corporal, Company E, the 130th IL US Infantry Regiment. It said hewas discharged June 17, 1865 and had been a prisoner of war. This fits prettyclose in time line since Joseph died in September, 1865. According to myresearch he never married.
