Obituary, Published in Chicago Suburban Daily Herald from Feb. 25 to Feb. 26, 2004Jonathan B. Hayes of Elgin Funeral services for Jonathan B. Hayes, 78, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, in the Church of the Redeemer, Elgin. Born Feb. 8, 1926, in Chicago, he passed away Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004. Burial will be in Bronswood Cemetery, Hinsdale. Jonathan graduated from Lyons Township High School in 1944. He was a veteran of the Army Air Corps 101st Airborne Division during World War II, and received the purple heart. He graduated from NIU Masters Educational Administration. He served 38 years in the Elgin School District U-46 as a teacher/principal at Garfield, Wayne and McKinley schools. He was an active member of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer of Elgin for 50 years, a member of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew and the Vestry, and a past Exalted Ruler of the Elgin Elks BPOE #737. He was a life member of the John Ericsson Republican League of Illinois, a delegate and member of the board of directors of the Elgin United Civic Association and a life member of the V.F.W. Post #1307. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #57, the Elgin Riverside Club, and the Elgin Eagle's Club #1047. He is survived by his wife, Phoebe; his daughters, Patricia (James) Lackman of Batavia and Julia (Michael) Kmieciak of Bristol, R.I.; his step-children, Rani Horton of Loves Park, Ill. and Eric Humbracht of Elgin; his grandchildren, Margaret Lackman, Justin and Jonathan Kmieciak; his sisters, Margaret Taylor, Carol Pangborn and Libby Hayes; and by his brothers, Richard and James Hayes. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Joann Hayes; and by his granddaughter, Ellie Hayes Lackman. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, in the Laird Funeral Home, 310 S. State St., Elgin, with the Elk's memorial service at 7:30 p.m., and from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services Friday, at the church.
