Adaliza Scott "Adda" Cook

(24 Nov 1858 - 15 Oct 1891)

"Her life was curiously checkered. Left motherless while a very little child...she came from Hartford City, Indiana to Kingston, Ohio to reside with an aunt. She was brought up with a great family of cousins, learning among them many of her attractive qualities... In the summer of 1882, she came to Fremont at the desire of her cousin, Mrs. Hayes; was adopted by General and Mrs. Hayes as a niece, and lived as one of the family until the time of her marriage"
Lucy Elliot Keeler.

"Addie is now going to school in Kingston...She is pretty and is developing into a very nice young lady. She is just the height of Aunt M. and very graceful. We must have her educated so she can make her own living while she is anxious to do. She is capable and you would scarcely know her"
Phebe McKell to Lucy Webb Hayes, April 1875

"Addie is the light of this house - a very pretty girl, a support for Lucy [Cook] Boggs"
Phebe McKell, Chillicothe, OH Oct. 22, 1878

"Addy Cook from Aunt Margaret's is with me now. She is a quiet, rather dignified girl, pleasant in appearance and sweet in character..." Lucy Webb Hayes to Rutherford Platt Hayes, Jan. 31, 1879

"Addie Cook's engagement to Mr. Boggs has been broken off - much to Addie's relief, I think"
J. S. McKell, Chillicothe, OH to Lucy Webb Hayes, Nov. 10, 1880
