Charles Henry Kaylor

(26 Feb 1848 - 16 Jul 1914)

From letters of Ruby Holm:
My father with his five brothers enlisted and fought in the Civil War, my father being in the 104th Ohio Volunteers Infantry at the age of fourteen (he passed for 16). After his discharge from the Army he went back to the people with whom he made his home after his mother died, by the name of Christman. He worked on their large farm all the time studying in books, trying to gain the education he had missed. He became quite a proficient debater and participated in debates and speeches around that part of the county. At the age twenty-nine he married Mary Ann Bride who was twenty-four.

When my mother was twenty-four years old she married Charles Henry Kaylor. They had eight children of which I am next to the youngest. I was born in Massillon, Perry Township, Ohio Dec 29, 1895. My father was the youngest of seven children. His parents had migrated from Lancaster County, PA and were of Pennsylvania Dutch descent. They settled in Lawrence Township Stark County Ohio. I can not recall their given names but I do know that my grandmother's maiden name was Smith. She died while quite young; a daughter Charlotte died at the age of twenty-one. My father with his five brothers all enlisted and fought in the Civil War; my father being in the 104th Ohio Volunteers Infantry at the age of sixteen. (I gave his badge to your Dad I think). After his discharge from the Army he went back to the people with whom he had made his home after his mother died and worked for awhile on their farm, all the time studying in books, trying to gain the education he had missed. He became quite a proficient debater and participated in debates and speeches around that part of the county.
